- Pose a focus question to the class
- Students will read the story the first time for the gist
- Then they will read the story a second time with a focus question in mind
- Next, begin to select key words (circling or writing) that could help answer the focus question
- Students record (circling or writing) on your own paper
- Have students meet with a small group and decide on a list of key words and list those on construction paper
- The group will post their list somewhere in the room
- Individuals walk around with their own lists, reading group lists, and adding words to their individual lists•Read the story a third time to solidify thinking
- 4 students will lead the group (2 sets of 2; 1 writes and 1 facilitates)
- Switch about half way through
- Hold up hand signals to show thoughts (1 finger= Keep It; 2 fingers = Junk It; 3 fingers = Cloud, which means not sure yet)
- Discuss the votes for both sides, Keeping or Junking each word
- Vote again
- Continue until a final list is made by all words being decided upon
