I originally saw this strategy in Linda Hoyt's book Revisit, Reflect, Retell. After reading a text, students have to pick two and only two words that show the most important parts of the text. They also have to justify their reasoning for choosing those two words. This has worked so well as an assessment tool for me to see what they are thinking is important and on top of that, WHY/HOW they came up with them. I have quickly been able to identify students who get it and students who are needing more practice.
