I love any idea I see out there on using music in teaching. It works so well for many things and one of those being poetry. Here are several songs that I use regularly. I have attached their lyrics as well.
I love all of these for all kinds of poetry lessons!! Of course, know your audience...I've had a couple of classes where a Miley Cyrus song just isn't going to work, but for the most part, these all work really well.
One of my favorites is Play On by Carrie Underwood. I don't think I've ever heard this song on the radio which is one of the reasons why I really like it. It usually means the kids don't have any background knowledge about it and can make for a really interesting lesson.
Another favorite is Brave by Sara Bareilles. The link takes you to her music video of this song. I LOVE it. After a bit of research, I found out that she filmed this in downtown LA and used all hidden cameras. So the people around had no idea the dancing and singing was for a music video and their reactions are genuine. The whole message of the song is to be brave in your own skin and I LOVE this for students. The video is a funny little extra.
The following are linked to the youtube videos of the song with just the lyrics showing.
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson
My Wish by Rascal Flatts
Life is a Highway by Rascal Flatts
Stand by Rascal Flatts
Never Alone by by Jim Brinkman and covered by Lady Antebellum (no lyrics video)
Play On by Carrie Underwood
Brave by Sara Bareilles
Firework by Katy Perry
Roar by Katy Perry
Red by Taylor Swift
The Climb by Miley Cyrus
Who Says by Selena Gomez
